Chennaiyin FC Makes Thrilling Comeback to Win 3-2 Over Odisha FC in Indian Super League Opener

Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], September 14 (ANI): In a thrilling comeback, Chennaiyin FC showcased their prowess as they overturned a goal deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over Odisha FC in their opening match of the Indian Super League 2024-25 season. The match, held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, saw Farukh Choudhary and Daniel Chima Chukwu finding the back of the net in spectacular fashion.

The victory was particularly sweet for Owen Coyle’s men as they ended Odisha FC’s impressive 569-day unbeaten streak at home. Farukh Choudhary was the hero of the night, scoring a brace with goals in the 48th and 51st minutes, while Chima Chukwu sealed the win with a powerful strike in the 69th minute.

The Marina Machans had been active in the transfer market, bolstering their squad with 13 new signings to enhance their performance this season. Among these new recruits were seasoned player Mandar Rao Desai and promising talent Lalrinliana Hnamte, both of whom started in the match against Odisha FC.

The game began with high intensity at the Kalinga Stadium. Chennaiyin’s goalkeeper, Samik Mitra, made an early crucial save to keep the hosts at bay. Moments later, Farukh Choudhary’s call for a penalty was dismissed by the referee. However, Odisha FC was awarded a penalty when Hugo Boumous went down under a challenge from Samik Mitra. Diego Mauricio converted from the spot to give Odisha an early lead.

Chennaiyin FC did not let this setback dampen their spirits. Connor Shields had an effort blocked midway through the first half, and Farukh Choudhary narrowly missed from close range. Samik Mitra continued his heroics by preventing Odisha from doubling their lead with a superb save. Lalrinliana Hnamte almost equalized with a brilliant free-kick that struck the upright.

After the halftime break, Chennaiyin FC’s persistence paid off. Farukh Choudhary leveled the score by tapping in from close range after Connor Shields’ excellent run and pass into the box. Just minutes later, Farukh intercepted a poor pass from Odisha’s goalkeeper Amrinder Singh, maintained his composure, and threaded the ball through Ahmed Jahouh’s legs to give Chennaiyin the lead.

The action continued as Chennaiyin’s new signings combined to produce a memorable moment for the fans. Right-back Laldinliana Renthlei made a powerful run into the box and crossed for Daniel Chima Chukwu, who unleashed a stunning volley on the half-turn to extend their lead to 3-1.

In stoppage time, Roy Krishna managed to pull one back for Odisha FC, but it was too late as Chennaiyin FC held on to their lead and secured maximum points from their opening match.

Riding high on confidence, Chennaiyin FC will aim to build on this positive start when they host newly-promoted Mohammedan SC in their first home game of the season on September 26.
