Netflix Japan Charts: Anime Series Lose Grip, K-Dramas and ‘Emily in Paris’ Hold Strong, ‘Minions’ Return

The week of August 19th to August 25th, 2024, brings an interesting mix to Netflix charts in Japan, reflecting changes introduced by Netflix in mid-June 2023. These modifications in measurement have led to noticeable shifts in the rankings, especially with the advent of the spring season, which is starting to influence the charts with new content. This period highlights a trend where several anime series are losing their foothold on the charts, with only one anime making the cut this week. “Oshi no Ko” has notably dropped to the sixth position. Additionally, the chart features a few K-dramas and some perennial favorites like “Emily in Paris,” maintaining their popularity.

Turning to movies, the chart exhibits significant shuffling compared to the previous week. There’s a considerable amount of movement and some titles have fallen off the list. However, familiar family-friendly films like “Minions” have made a reappearance. Interestingly, both “Kingsman” films have also returned to the spotlight. On top of that, the live-action adaptation of “Death Note” has climbed back onto the charts, accompanied by two other films from its franchise. Meanwhile, representing the anime genre in movies, “The Concierge” has secured its place on the list.

This dynamic week on Netflix’s Japanese charts showcases a blend of enduring favorites and fresh entries across both series and films, reflecting evolving viewer preferences and the impact of recent content measurement changes.
