23rd Dr. T Ao Trophy Football Tournament Commences in Nagaland; Chief Minister Rio Announces Initiatives for Youth Empowerment and Sports Development

DIMAPUR — The 23rd edition of the inter-district football tournament, known as the Dr. T Ao Trophy, commenced with great fervor on Tuesday. This much-anticipated event, organized by the Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and hosted by the Tuensang District Football Association (TDFA), is being held at the renowned Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground in Tuensang.

The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of Neiphiu Rio, the Chief Minister of Nagaland, who officiated as the principal guest. Accompanying him was S Keoshu Yimkhuing, an MLA and Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, who attended as the special guest.

In his inspiring speech, Chief Minister Rio paid tribute to Dr. T Ao, a legendary figure in Indian football and captain of the Indian team at the 1948 London Olympics. He highlighted Dr. T Ao’s immense influence not only on the sport but also on the people of Nagaland. Dr. T Ao’s journey, which saw him being courted by European football clubs, remains a beacon of inspiration for many.

Rio took this opportunity to encourage the youth to uphold and carry forward Dr. T Ao’s legacy in sports. He assured that the Nagaland government is resolute in its commitment to improving sports infrastructure across all districts. The chief minister also praised the Department of Youth Resources and Sports for their relentless efforts in realizing the dreams and aspirations of the youth in both sports and music. Notably, he declared 2024 as the “Year of Youth Empowerment,” emphasizing the state’s dedication to nurturing young talents.

Reflecting on recent successes, Rio mentioned Hokato Hotozhe Sema’s bronze medal win at the 2024 Paralympics and celebrated the achievements of Naga sportspersons at national-level competitions. He urged young athletes to strive for excellence with discipline and dedication.

Additionally, Rio pledged to prioritize the enhancement of facilities at Loyem Memorial Ground, including constructing additional galleries, a security wall, and installing electrification systems. This will encompass setting up floodlights powered by generators to enable night matches.

Another significant announcement was the introduction of the Nagaland Football League, initially supported by the state government. Rio stressed the importance of promoting women’s participation in football, underscoring a more inclusive approach to sports development.

Lima Onen, an MLA and convenor of the Planning Committee, delivered a warm welcome address. Following this, K Neibou Sekhose, president of the NFA, gave a heartfelt presidential address, expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Rio for his pivotal role in advancing sports, especially football. Sekhose emphasized that in sports, rewards come through merit and hard work, urging players to remain committed.

He described the day as historic, celebrating a legacy that has motivated countless individuals. He highlighted that Dr. T Ao epitomized excellence, perseverance, sportsmanship, and unity. The trophy, he noted, symbolizes the power of sports to unite people and inspire future generations.

The inaugural program featured a thematic performance by Langasomba, music director of Tuensang Town Baptist Lashong, titled “Together We Can Soar.” Additionally, BYE TTBL presented an energetic cardio act.

Furthermore, Chief Minister Rio inaugurated a newly constructed rostrum at the Loyem Memorial Astro Turf Ground. Following this momentous event, the tournament’s first match saw Tuensang securing a commanding 10-0 victory over Kiphire, marking a promising start for the home team.
